Fabergé and His Menagerie
The Animal Creations of the Fabergé Workshop
Rarely seen treasures of the famed Russian artisan Carl Fabergé are revealed in this exhibition of 120 miniature carvings, on view Feb. 7 through May 9, 2004. Drawing on Russia’s wealth of semi-precious stones – jasper, quartz, lapis lazuli and amethyst – Fabergé carved these charming creatures, some as small as one-half inch, using each stone’s natural variations to represent physical attributes of the animals or objects, such as a seal’s wet skin, a mouse’s fur or a bird’s feathers.
