Portland Japanese Garden presents Ohara Ikebana Exhibition - Portland Japanese Garden What distinguishes ikebana from other approaches to flower arrangement? Asymmetrical form and the use of "empty" space are essential features of the composition. A sense of harmony among the materials, the container, and the setting is also crucial. Ikebana shares these aesthetic characteristics with traditional Japanese paintings, gardens, architecture, and design.
On March 20-21 the members of the Portland Chapter of the Ohara School, led by Master Teacher Kitty Akre, set the tone for early spring with an array of exquisite designs on display in the Pavilion of the Portland Japanese Garden. EVENT DAY(S): 03/20/10 - 03/21/10

Bullseye Gallery presents April Surgent: Reflect - Bullseye Gallery “My work,” says Surgent, “is an investigation of the inherent link between person and place. Inspiration comes from the familiar everyday moments…caught on a whim or through long observation. ”The exhibition is a collection of fused and cameo-engraved glassworks that begin with a photograph, combining an ancient technique with a contemporary medium. “The transformation,” Surgent continues, “of a photograph into a relief engraving on glass makes a passing moment permanent.”

Chambers@916 presents Blakely Dadson: All that glitters... - Chambers @ 916 All that glitters... features new paintings in acrylic, thread, and glitter by Blakely Dadson, who compares his process to alchemy - the transformation of paint into gold. The work synthesizes contemporary culture's obsession with bling, adding an ironic twist with prominent Jesus iconography.

Museum of Contemporary Craft presents Land Art: David Shaner - Museum of Contemporary Craft Through selected works by David Shaner, this exhibition examines connections between currently renewed interest in Land Art and contemporary ceramics. Drawn from works in both the Shaner family’s and the Museum’s collections, this exhibition offers work from 1964 to the 1990s as a lens to an alternative relationship between land and art. PDX Contemporary Art presents Marie Watt “Marker” - PDX Contemporary Art Many native tribes marked trails, water sources and other important areas by tying down saplings so that they would grow into permanent markers. I am interested in the physical manifestation and human impulse to makers markers as vehicles for storytelling, wayfinding, memorializing, and location-siting. With this body of work, I am investigating both abstract and figurative representations of marker as directional sign; act of negation; a common signature for an illiterate; symbol for a kiss; a spot on a map. I am compelled by how the senses are engaged in memory—how, for example, the touch of wool or the scent of cedar trigger the embodiment of a story.

Quintana Galleries presents SHAUN PETERSON works on paper - Quintana Galleries During the month of March we are showing the graphic works of a dynamic young artist from the Puyallup band of the Coast Salish tribe in Washington. Our collection of works on paper exemplify his vision: bold, classical Salish forms mingling with contemporary compositions and vibrant colors. Shaun places great importance on the role of art as an agent of tradition, " I believe that the art itself has been most responsible for preserving our stories through intrigue and curiosity...I keep in mind that it's not the media that drives the works themselves but the story or feeling it is supposed to carry to the observer".
